Jak’s is a hardcore skateboard team that emerged in the early 80’s when the punk scene was at it’s height. The team is a blend of old school skaters, hardcore punkers and crazy fuckers that skate. In those days not everyone and their dog skated… it was a lifestyle. There are Jaks in several cities on the west coast: Vancouver, Victoria, Seattle, and the birthplace Petaluma San Francisco. These cities have spawnednew teams such as the Bopo Boys, Hate City and Team Shiddy.
The team and friends get together every year to have a reunion in the host city of choice. The reunion consists of skateboarding, punk gigs, beer guzzling, and serious shit raising. Every second Saturday in September the Vancouver Jaks put on a skate competition for the local East Van kids to show their stuff. Trophies are made and prizes are donated by Skull Skates, Zulu Records and others. Usually by the end it’s chaos. The first contest was won by Sluggo. He did a rippin’ run and finished with a break dance on his head. 13 years later it’s still as crazy as ever.
To be accepted onto the team, one must have a petition signed by every member of that division. You can recognize a Jak by his colours (jean vest customized to individual). When it’s completed colours are made (or you can go to Vic and party with Knob Schwan and he’ll draw you some up for free). Chances are you’ll catch up to one of the Jaks tearin it up on the street, in a pit, or on stage at the Cobalt. Jaks Team is the name and absolute music is the game!
